In addition to the Rivian R1T and Rivian R1S, the Rivian EDV 700 is now on sale, albeit exclusively on Amazon. Amazon delivered more than 430,000 packages using Rivian EDV prototypes from 2021 through launch, the company said in a YouTube video on September 23, 2022. The company began delivering packages of the final version of its custom electric van on July 21, 2022.

Chicago, San Diego, Phoenix, Baltimore, Dallas, Kansas City, Nashville, Seattle and St. Louis are among the various cities where the so-called Rivian Amazon van operates. By the end of 2022, the EDV 700 will be present in more than 100 cities. By 2030, Amazon aims to expand the use of its custom electric vans to 100,000 locations in the US. Here’s everything we know about the Rivian Amazon van.

Customized design

The Rivian EDV 700 is an electric van designed specifically for Amazon, so if you want to buy one, you’re out of luck. EDV is a series of multiple electric vans that Rivian plans to gradually launch as it expands its range of commercial vehicles. The other models officially confirmed for launch are Rivian EDV 500 and Rivian 900, and as their names suggest, the former is a smaller model and the latter a larger model.

Platform and dimensions

The Rivian EDV 700 is on the RCV platform, which is quite different from the platform on which the brand’s passenger models are based. According to an MotorTrend report, while the R1T and R1S have an aluminum skateboard architecture and an aluminum-intensive body, the EDV use a steel body on a steel ladder frame skateboard.

In conversation with Bloomberg in July 2022, Robert Scaringe, founder and CEO, Rivian, said “the van and consumer vehicle are similar.” They use the same core technologies, including the electronic stack, the network architecture, and elements of the propulsion platform. However, the body and interior are very different.

The EDV 700 is 277 inches long and has a wheelbase of 187 inches. Weighing 9,350 pounds. (gross) the electric van offers a cargo space of 660 cubic feet. While “EDV” in the model name is the abbreviation of the vehicle type, “700” refers to the estimated cargo space it offers.

Battery & Motor

Rivian has said the EDV 700 achieved a range of 201 miles on a full charge when tested under EPA’s procedure. In its shareholder letter for the fourth quarter of 2021, the company said it will offer the RCV platform models in single-engine FWD and twin-engine AWD configurations. The document suggested the use of the new, in-house designed and manufactured R1 single-motor drive unit in Rivian’s electric vans by the end of 2022.

During Rivian’s Q1 2022 conference call on May 11, 2022, Scaringe revealed that the company will use an ‘Enduro’ single-engine drive unit in a front-wheel drive EDV model later in 2022. At a later stage, it will use the Enduro engine in dual-engine AWD R1 product (R1T or R1S), one at the front and one at the rear. It is currently installing a factory to produce the Enduro drive unit.

Coming soon iron-based chemistry

The EDV 700 battery pack consists of NMC (Nickel Manganese-Cobalt) cells, but in the future Rivian will introduce a different configuration with a more cost-effective and durable battery pack consisting of LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cells. On March 10, 2022, during the company’s fourth quarter 2021 conference call, Scaringe confirmed that it will introduce a standard battery pack containing LFP cells in commercial vehicles later in 2022, followed by passenger models by the end of 2023.

We believe that our commercial customers will see similar day-to-day opportunities with LFP chemistry, and this chemistry provides significant cost savings for us.

Rivian Shareholder Letter Q4 2021

Scaringe revealed that while the company develops battery chemistry entirely in-house, the LFP cells to be introduced later in 2022 will come from a third-party supplier. In the R1T and R1S, Rivian expects its Standard Battery Pack to deliver a range of more than 260 miles.

During the Q1 2022 earnings conference call, Scaringe said LFP chemistry is excellent for a base model configuration and a commercial vehicle. In addition to diversification in cell chemistry, the company wants to ensure the right selection of cell suppliers. Scaringe reaffirmed that an EDV model will debut the LFP battery pack and that the R1 product line will receive it later.

The Rivian EDV700 has quite a car-like appearance on the inside. It features a sleek dashboard, a fully digital instrument panel, a flat-bottomed two-spoke steering wheel and a large horizontal infotainment system with touchscreen. The center console faces the driver for easier access to the infotainment system with minimal distraction. Rivian has used gray as the base color for the cabin and added blue accents in the Amazon version to match the Amazon Prime color scheme.

The Rivian Amazon bus has a number of built-in features to ensure that the driver gets at least a basic level of comfort and safety. It includes a climate control system, a large touchscreen infotainment system, heated and cooled seats and steering wheel and heated armrests. Another interesting feature is the heated wire-based defrost.

Thanks to a forward-hinged door (instead of a sliding door) on the driver’s side, the EDV 700 should offer the driver more protection in the event of a side impact in an accident. The steps provide sufficient grip, even when it is wet, and there are also handles for safe entry and exit from the cabin. Radar and camera-based ADAS features such as Forward-Collision Alert, Automatic Energy Braking and Lane Keeping Assist are also part of the package.

Rivian has received an order of 100,000 EDVs from Amazon and it will be a mix of multiple models. The company plans to ship the EDV 500 next, a model that is narrower and shorter than the EDV 700. The larger EDV 900 is likely to reach Amazon facilities in 2023 or later. Every commercial vehicle that Rivian sells to Amazon will feature FleetOS, the end-to-end, centralized fleet management platform that earns it a monthly subscription fee.

During this time, we also worked closely with Amazon to fine-tune the digital integration of the EDV and our software platform to support the most effective operation of the vehicles.
